Compostable dog poop bags

Updated on January 20, 2023

As you know, all our products are TÜV AUSTRIA Home Compost Certified to be of ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 standards! However, what does this mean when it comes to compostable bags?

It is a question that we are asked a lot, and that is why we have decided to answer this question. So get ready to find out what are TÜV Austria compostable bags?

What Is TÜV Austria?

TÜV Austria is an independent certification program for products that meet different technical requirements. In fact, the OK compost HOME program served as the basis for several standards such as AS 5810, NF T 51800, and prEN 17427.

The products with the TÜV AUSTRIA certification have a guarantee to complete biodegradability in the light of specific requirements. That's to say that our compostable dog poop bags are truly compostable, and they can even degrade in your garden compost bin.

What Does It Mean That Our Dog Poop Bags Are TÜV Austria HOME Certified?

TÜV Austria grants various certifications, such as the OK compost INDUSTRIAL and the OK compost HOME, in the latter are our dog waste bags.

Products that have the OK certification as INDUSTRIAL can only be composted in industrial composting facilities; that is to say, at temperatures above 55ºC.

On the other hand, those that have the OK compost HOME certification can compost at lower temperatures, being ideal for preparing compost in the garden or balcony.

Compostable Is Better Than Biodegradable?

When we talk about the TÜV Austria certification another question arises, one that we are usually asked, is it better compostable or biodegradable?

The truth is that these two terms are often confused and even used as synonyms, but they are not.

A biodegradable product can be decomposed by microorganisms, but not necessarily make good compost. On the other hand, bioplastics can biodegrade but only be composted in specific facilities and at very high temperatures.

In contrast, compostable products can degrade in a compost bin in the garden or on the balcony at low temperatures and generally in a short period of time. Our dog poop bags begin their breakdown at 60 days.

What Evidence Supports Our Dog Poop Bags As Compostable?

The process to obtain the OK compost HOME certification from TÜV Austria is very exhaustive because it must be verified that the product complies with the European standard EN 14432 of packaging compostability.

For this standard, the product must pass a disintegration test, one of ecotoxity that proves that the product does not generate any damage to the environment when composting, one of heavy metal content.

Finally, it is evaluated whether the product can actually be composted in a home compost environment in less than a year.

    Hi Susan,

Thanks for your message. I cannot tell you what every TÜV Austria compostable bags are made of, but I can explain to you the ingredients from our compostable poop bags.

Give a Sh!t compostable poop bags are made of 100% botanical plant components. We use only Cornstarch, BPAT (compostable polymer), and edible glycerin in the nature-based creation of our dog waste bags.

Regarding ‘advanced technology’, we use cutting-edge methods to turn natural, renewable materials into functional, eco-friendly products. For example, raw materials (like cornstarch) are transformed to ensure the material is strong yet biodegradable.
